Cloud storage

The GWDG hosts an ownCloud server for the Max Planck Society. It can be used to synchronize data between the institute and other devices (like a laptop).

Request procedure

Important: Please have a look here to learn which kind of data you are allowed to upload to the ownCloud

  1. You need a GWDG account to use this service.

Should I back up my ownCloud data?

Short answer: yes

Having your data in the cloud is not a backup. Imagine you accidentally delete all your data from the local directory that is synced to the ownCloud server. The ownCloud client will immediately delete all your data on the server, too. Although, the ownCloud has a trash which can be used to restore deleted files via the web interface but it's size is limited. Some of your data might be permanently deleted when the trash is full.

Is there a way to restore deleted/overwritten files?

The ownCloud server has a trash which contains recently deleted files and some kind of version control which allows access to previous versions of a file.

Important: Both the trash and the version control can only use a limited amount of space. Both deleted files and old version will be permanently deleted when the limit is reached.

If you cannot restore your file via ownCloud's web interface and have synchronized your files to the institute's storage system, you can write a ticket. The IT department might be able to restore it.

How can I share files and folders?

OwnCloud allows you to share files and folders either with other ownCloud users or with everyone else (public links). Caution: The person you want to share the data with must have logged in to ownCloud at least once beforehand. Otherwise the account will be labeled with 'Federated' and not with 'User' as normally. Please refer to the ownCloud documentation for more information.

Is there a way to directly access the contents of the ownCloud via a file manager?

Yes, you can use the WebDAV protocol for that.

On Linux systems just enter the following URL to the location field and enter your credentials:

davs://owncloud.gwdg.de/remote.php/webdav/

On Windows you have to connect to a network location using this URL:

https://owncloud.gwdg.de/remote.php/webdav/
